mrgodot @ 02:54 pm: I've never read anything by the Marquis de Sade but I have always wanted to. I can't decide whether i should read 120 Days or Justine first. Which do you think is better and why should I read that one first?

Maybe I am an idiot, but I found Justine easier to understand than 120 of Sodom... Therefore, I enjoyed it more.

I doubt it's because you're an idiot. From what I hear 120 days is pretty heavy.

First of all, great icon. :) Second, I liked Justine better but that's just me. It was my first time reading Marquis and what an intense experience it was.

i've read the misfortunes of virtue and just started 120 days of sodom.

120 days of sodom is really really graphic, compared to misfortunes which was a little more vague (for lack of a better word, i mean vague as in it didn't describe all the debauches as in depth, maybe it was the publisher?)

i dont know which one to recommend though, i've never read justine.

When I looked it up on amazon its aid "Justine; Or misfortunes of virtue". Then there was another collection of short stories under that title which the writers say contains a "cleaner and shorter" version of Justine.

So my question is is misfortunes of virtue a series of short stories or just one story?

It's a much shorter version. An R-rated version, Justine is XXX.

Just to clarify

Are you recommending the collection of short stories in which Misfortunes of Virtue is a shorter cleaner version of Justine?
